First Meeting - Bring an IPAD!! ;-)
Just some tips from my first (and succesful) meeting with a Ukrainian woman.
I purchased an iPad mini prior to my trip for her. My intentions were to give it to her if we indeed we had chemistry. And we did. The ipad offered a great way to communicate. We had a translator, but not the whole time. While Natasha speaks basic English, the google translator works awesome.
As well, we managed to play scrabble, yahtzee, and a few other games together that required teamwork. It showed us very quickly that we truly were equals in the game play, while we both helped each other out to win the game.
She uses it now to e-mail me daily. Our translator was nice enough, but she is certainly in it for the money and this alleviates a lot of costs. Of course she can skype of in, e-mail, and so on.
Anyways, just my two cents. It was more then worth the investment.

Expensive gift on 1st meeting? Not a good idea usually
When this topic was posted in 2012, an IPad was an expensive piece of technology. This usually is not a good idea for the type of gift to bring a foreign woman on first meeting, for a number of reasons. By the poster's own words, he uses it as a tool to avoid interpreter costs, which is to say that whatever service/s he has agreed to use for the trip are now being avoided for cost savings. Ok, I'm sure many of us can reason that out and probably accept it. But the one thing that came to mind for us while reading the post: what message is he giving to the woman? A few minutes into his relationship with her, he shows himself to be cheating the service he's agreed to us. He is telling the woman that he is financially sound enough to hand out expensive toys, and all for the supposed purpose of communicating with her more easilly.
Now the rest of the story.
What does the woman see? A rich American who likes to hand out expensive gifts. Or...a mark for exploitation? Does she have 'friends' who work with her to scam guys just like him? Tourists are always the easiest mark in a foreign land, and sometimes the process of separating them from their money ends up in hospital stays, or a trip to the morgue.

Bring a smart phone during first date with a foreign woman
Now, of course, I can bring my smartphone loaded with a Russian translation app. Communicate directly with my Russian babe.
Don't most Russian women speak a little english?
Easy Peezy.
For a few rubles I can fly to Russia, rent a luxury hotel room, and go talk to a gorgeous foreign woman.
I'm game.

Expensive gift for Russian Woman
I think the point of the post was how much help and fun the guy and his Russian lady got from using technology, not about the cost. Why not use online tools like translators and even social media? Tools are tools, and if the tool helps love to blossom, then so be it.
Yeah I understand that Russian women and Ukrainian women could be gold digging whores after your money, but pretty Poly down her american street could gut your life and finances just as well - just after she says 'I do'.
I think using a smart phone during a introduction tour to Russia or Ukraine is a smart thing to do. Plus, you can rig the phone to give up its gps while your Russian lady is out and about. "You say you are at your mother's...then why is the phone you're talking on show you being somewhere else?"

Spy on the woman you love
friely, I had not thought of using a gift smart phone as a tracking device for my girlfriend...
Genius!
Spy on a Russian woman? What! Of course we would never do that.
(twisting end of mustache :-)
